Longest Day Away - 4x4 Self Drive
Experience the longest day possible on magnificent Fraser Island, visit the sights you want to see at your own pace.
Make the most of the day with a 06.45 departure from Urangan Boat Harbour, Hervey Bay on the Kingfisher Bay passenger catamaran, just a short 40 minute ride will have you berthing at Kingfisher Bay Resort.
After going through the preliminaries and perhaps a visit to the bakery, you are on you way to explore the magnificent wonders of the largest sand island in the world.
The crystal-clear waters of Lake McKenzie are one of the highlights of a visit to Fraser Island. One of 100 freshwater lakes on the island, Lake McKenzie was named for a pioneering timber merchant. The peat-like base generally stains the water a tea colour, but Lake McKenzie is a brilliant blue, with white sandy beaches.
Central Station, follow the boardwalks along the banks of the Wanggoolba Creek through the dense rainforest at Central Station and you'll pass angiopteris ferns, one of the island's rare and endangered plants. Originally established as a forestry camp when there was logging on Fraser Island, Central Station is now home to a Queensland Parks and Wildlife Service ranger station where displays explain the development of the island and its flora and fauna. There is an information centre, picnic area and several walking tracks of varying lengths.
The massive, rusting hulk of the passenger steam ship Maheno, wrecked while being towed to Japan for scrap, is a dramatic sight off Fraser Island's wild eastern coast. In 1935, the Maheno was caught in a cyclone and came adrift from its tow, beaching near the Pinnacles, where it has remained ever since.
